What is Botox?
Botox is a widely recognized brand of neuromodulating agents. It contains Botulinum Toxin, a purified protein that has both cosmetic and therapeutic applications.
The Botox process (or other neuromodulating agents such as Disport® and Xeomin®) involves injections containing purified bacteria into the areas of concern. When injected into the facial muscles, Botox releases neurotoxins. These substances can interrupt the signals from the nerves to the muscles, preventing the muscles from contracting, which ultimately helps them relax.
At Clinique Dentaire France Gascon, Dr. Gascon is trained in administering Botox treatments.

-
How long does a Botox treatment take, and what is involved?
Usually, a Botox treatment takes 15-25 minutes depending on the area(s) to be treated. A fine needle is used to inject Botox into specific muscles. Generally, no anesthetic is required but in some cases, topical anesthesia (numbing cream) may be used.
-
Is Botox safe?
Our dentists are familiar with the relevant anatomy. They will employ measures associated with the safe and effective use of Botox, which includes proper storage, selection of the correct dose, and proper administration techniques. Our dentists will provide patient-specific care and, for your safety, may inquire about any alterations to the anatomy such as prior surgical procedures.
-
How long does a Botox treatment last?
Botox treatments generally last 3-4 months, depending on how the individual person metabolizes it. Talk to your dentist about how often they recommend you receive Botox.
-
Is there anything I should do to prepare for treatment?
Before your appointment, please make sure your dentist is aware of your health status and ask any questions you may have. Botulinum toxin is a temporary procedure, and individual patients respond differently—exact results cannot be guaranteed.
On the day of your treatment, you must stay in an upward position and not manipulate the area of injection or participate in strenuous activity for 4 hours after treatment.
If applicable, confirm that to your knowledge you are not pregnant and that you do not have any significant neuralgic or muscular disease.
-
What are the risks associated with Botox?
Individual patients respond differently, and exact results cannot be guaranteed.
Possible effects may include minor bruising, swelling, temporary headache, flu-like symptoms, and occasional temporary numbness of the forehead.
More rarely, treatment of forehead lines can cause a minor temporary drop of one eyelid in approximately 2% of injections, which usually lasts 2–3 weeks.
-
Who should avoid Botox treatment?
Botox treatment should be avoided by:
- Individuals with infection at the proposed injection site(s)
- Individuals who have previously had an allergic reaction to Botulinum toxin type A injections
- Individuals with muscle problems or chronic diseases affecting the muscles
- Individuals under the age of 18 years
- Individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding
-
What are the post-treatment care recommendations?
Any swelling, bruising, tiny bumps or redness is normal at the site of injections and usually goes away within 12–24 hours.
For the first 4 hours after your treatment:
- Do not rub or massage the treated areas
- Do not do strenuous exercise; also avoid facials or saunas
- Do not lie down
- If you need to apply make-up, use a gentle touch
Results of your treatment may take up to 14 days to take full effect.
A 2-week follow-up appointment is planned so Dr. Gascon can assess how your facial muscles reacted; if more product is needed to fine tune/adjust results, it may be applied during this appointment at an additional cost, and results will be photographed and documented in your confidential patient file.
To maintain results, your dentist will typically see you again in 3–4 months; please ensure you book this appointment before you leave our office.
